Vintage Rolex watches

If you’re in the market for a pre-owned or vintage Rolex watch, there is plenty of choice. You could probably be on the lookout for a nice Oyster Perpetual or a fluted bezel Datejust. In the free market there are many collectors and enthusiasts looking for vintage Rolex watches, preferably with a four-digit reference number since Rolex started with these four-digit reference numbers back in the 40s and 50s.

It tells a story

Why do we call it vintage?

First of all, a vintage or pre-owned Rolex watch is at least 20 to 30 years old, meaning it is vintage. There is a story to tell with these vintage Rolex watches. You can find some patina on the dial or indices, maybe some wear on the bracelet.

Most important the watch is worn before and sometimes even by a celebrity or famous people. That really makes the story interesting about these vintage Rolex watches.

Vintage Daytona

Paul Newman

A famous actor and race driver allegedly wore a Rolex Daytona every day until his death back in 2008. He was spotted wearing multiple Rolex Daytona’s with the tropical dial and ‘Daytona’ written in red.

These watches tend to be really popular amongst collectors and sometimes being sold for well over €100.000. If you’re lucky enough to get your hands on one of these, you might keep them for the next generation as it seems to be a solid investment.

Vintage Rolex Datejust

Another really popular model in the Rolex collection, is the vintage Rolex Datejust. These models were released back in the 40s as a solid yellow gold version with its Jubilee bracelet. The four-digit reference numbers like the 1601 or 1603 are pretty affordable, starting at around €6.000 on Wristler for a well-maintained piece.

Vintage Rolex Day-Date

For the upper-class, the Rolex Day-Date was released. A lot of CEO’s and presidents wore this particular piece. With its extended Jubilee bracelet (called the president) the Rolex Day-Date is solely made of gold: white gold, yellow gold or rose gold. A popular model in this range is the 1803 Day-Date with a champagne dial, yellow gold case and a fluted bezel. This watch trades hands for around €18.000 on Wristler.

Vintage Sub’s

There are many versions of the Rolex Submariner, but one thing is always the same: the design. Since the launch back in the 50s, Rolex never really changed the look of the Submariner. They’ve added a Cyclops lens in 1966 for the date display, but that’s about it. You can find yourself an early vintage Rolex Submariner for roughly €15.000. If you’re in the market for the COMEX vintage Submariner, you might need to pay at least €30.000.

Vintage GMT-Master

One of the coolest watches around: the vintage Rolex GMT-Master. This watch patinas very well and the older the watch, the better the look is on this thing. The vintage Rolex GMT-Master is available with an aluminum bezel, in red or blue or black. With a nice, warm patina on the dial (tropical dial) and the indices, these watches are highly sought-after by enthusiasts. These watches are for sale for roughly €15.000 and up.

Were it all started: the vintage Rolex Oyster Perpetual is the king of queens. This watch, with an Oyster case and Oyster bracelet is the basis for all the other watches. Rolex uses the Oyster case on different models, like the Sea-Dweller, Sky-Dweller and GMT-Master.

The Oyster Perpetual was launched in a 34mm version, but later on in a 36mm as well. You can find yourself a nice piece for around €4.500.
