Description
Sometimes we come across a watch that simply makes us smile — and we think we have one of those specimens here. This is an 18k gold Rolex ref. 6512, and flat is definitely the word. Or, as Rolex itself called it, “Veriflat”. How flat? Just 8–9 mm thick, while measuring a neat 34 mm across — the thinnest Oyster case Rolex had to offer at the time. So why did Rolex make it? Quite simply, to create a slim and elegant dress watch while retaining the rugged protection of the waterproof Oyster case. The Veriflat was produced exclusively in precious metals, including yellow and pink gold. Rolex developed its manual-winding calibre 1000 specifically for the model, essentially taking the automatic calibre 1030 and removing the rotor to create a wonderfully slim movement. In rare cases, Rolex fitted these movements with chronometer certification — and this watch is one of those special examples. But this particular 6512 is extra, extra special. Maybe even unique. The watch features a classic silver dial with elegant applied markers, a Swiss-only designation at 6 o’clock and sharp dauphine hands. But the real showstopper is the “Amtlich Geprüfter Chronometer” text printed at 12 o’clock. We simply cannot recall seeing this unusual German designation on another ref. 6512. “Amtlich Geprüfter Chronometer” translates roughly as “Officially Tested Chronometer” and points towards chronometer certification for the German-speaking market. The 34 mm 18k gold case is in lovely condition and is fitted with one of our Bulang & Sons leather straps and buckles. The watch and its hand-wound chronometer movement have been fully serviced by our watchmaker and are ready for many more years of enjoyment. A seriously unusual Rolex Veriflat, with an incredibly rare dial configuration. Thin, elegant and just a little bit nerdy — the kind of Rolex we absolutely love. Very flat. Very rare.... Sehr schön!
