Investing in Rolex Watches

Investing is hot. We know that. You can invest in shares, real estate, (classic) cars, but of course also in luxury watches. This time we list why it is a good idea to invest in Rolex watches, which models are a good asset and most importantly: wearing your investment. Please note: we are happy to help you get started, but we are not financial advisors. So don't take this as binding advice. We would be happy to tell you more about what the possible opportunities are.

Watches as Assets

At the moment, putting money in your savings account is not very interesting. Although interest rates are rising again, it is not very profitable to save money. You receive no (or little) interest. Or you even have to pay negative interest. In any case: you often pay your bills, which means your savings cost money. Inflation is also hot at the moment. And that means that you can spend your money in other ways. How are you going to do that?

You can of course choose to invest in shares, invest in real estate or intangible crypto. Although this has become increasingly difficult in recent years due to changing government rules and the supply of attractive, cheaper homes. The trend is changing: nowadays you can also invest very well in watches. And of course not the watches that cost a few tens of euros: if you have a little more budget available, it is best to invest in beautiful timepieces, such as those from Rolex. Did you know that in recent years the returns on pre-owned Rolex watches were much higher than the returns on gold, real estate or shares? Keep in mind, that these are averages taken from data of the European market only.

Budget Rolex watches

We would like to tell you everything about investing in a Rolex. They are not cheap watches. Especially if you look at the past few years when prices have risen considerably. Yet you can be the proud owner of a beautiful ‘Cheap Rolex’ for around €2.000. For example, you go for a classic Rolex Cellini. Or you can buy a vintage Oyster Perpetual, with an Oyster band from, for example, 1975.

If you want something new(er), you will also need a little more budget. Due to the long waiting times at dealers, you can hardly buy a Rolex new out of the box anywhere at the moment. And that is exactly why vintage and second-hand watches are increasing significantly in value.

Vintage Rolex Datejust

A very popular model and a good investment is a vintage Rolex Datejust. Then of course we're talking about a Vintage Rolex Datejust in 36mm version. With a white gold bezel and jubilee strap. You could buy this about three years ago for around €2.500. If you are looking for the same watch, you will have to bring approximately €4.500. And that is of course quite a nice return in three years.

The Rolex Datejust has been on the market since 1945 and is still one of the most popular models in the Rolex collection today. The classic dress watch is available in many different materials and dial colors. If you want a steel and gold-steel Datejust, you can get them from around €4.500. But if you want to go for the completely yellow gold variant, you will soon have to transfer double that amount.

Rolex Submariner

Another popular Rolex  model is the Submariner, which was introduced in 1953. The best-known version of the diver's watch with a rotating bezel is the steel version with a black dial. Popular among investors of Rolex watches. If you want to be part of the group that purchases a black Sub, take into account approximately €10.000. If you buy one, go for the reference 14060.

The Rolex Submariner is also available in other variants. The green Subs such as the 'Kermit' and the 'Hulk' are especially popular. You just need to have a little more money in your pocket if you go for a green Rolex Submariner, for example. The 'Hulk' (ref. 116610LV) with a green dial and green bezel will easily cost you more than €20.000. Fortunately, the 'Kermit' is slightly more affordable and can be purchased from €15.000. In the case of the 'Kermit', invest again for a 5-digit reference number. Reference 16610LV that is.

Rolex GMT-Master

Just like the Submariner, there are many different  Rolex GMT-Master models. You can choose either a GMT-Master or a GMT-Master II. While the GMT-Master II is still in production, the GMT-Master has not been in production since 1999.

Popular and timeless models are the 5-digit Rolex 'Pepsi' or 'Coke'. The 'Pepsi' with the black-red bezel is a much sought-after model. The Rolex 'Coke' with black red bezel is also a beautiful model. You can choose from, for example, a ref 16700, 16750 or 16760. Nice model to invest in, but reserve at least €12.000.

Rolex Day-Date

An all-time favorite: the Rolex Day-Date. This one always works well. A popular model with its beautiful presidential bracelet and written day indication. If you want to invest in a Day-Date, the refs. 18038 and ref. 18238 are good choices. You can get this yellow gold classic in different colors. Are you going for a black or white dial? Or would you prefer gold or blue? Keep in mind that you will have to cough up at least €10.000 to purchase a nice piece on a gold bracelet.

If you're not into striking yellow gold, you can also get the Rolex Day-Date in white gold, rose gold or even platinum. Be warned: those prices are a lot higher than the amount mentioned above.

Wearing your investment

If you look at the major investors in this world, they often achieve a return of about 5 to 10% per year. At Rolex the average is more than 13% each year, looking at the last decades. This means that you can double your investment in less than 6 years! A nice advantage of investing in a Rolex: you can wear your investment. And so enjoy it while you can earn money. A classic win-win if you ask us.
