The James Cameron Sea-Dweller

A special version of the Rolex Sea-Dweller named after the director of the Titanic: it’s the James Cameron Rolex Sea-Dweller Deepsea. With its blue and black dial, it really stands out from the other watches within the Sea-Dweller collection. It features a D-Blue dial as Rolex has called it, it’s as blue as the deep sea and it features the 3235 caliber with a 70-hour power reserve.

All about the honor

Hollywood director and award winner James Cameron received a special honor from Rolex back in 2014 with his very own model: the Rolex Sea-Dweller Deepsea James Cameron Edition with a D-blue dial. Usually the names given to watches are nicknames, like the Paul Newman, Batman or Coke, but the James Cameron was initiated by Rolex which was a brand first.

The James Cameron is a collaboration between the filmmaker and the watch brand during Cameron’s Deepsea Challenge back in 2012. For this expedition, National Geographic and Rolex teamed up to develop a one-man submersible to explore the Challenger Deep, the deepest section of the Mariana Trench. He reach a depth of 10.908 meters!

The D-Blue dial

The dial stands for the gradient when under water, just as the ocean gets darker when you dive deeper, so that’s why Rolex used the D-blue (black and blue gradient) dial on the Rolex James Cameron edition. It’s water-resistant to 3.900 meters and features the automatic helium escape valve.

The watch is a true collector’s item and can be found for roughly €15.000 on the grey market, depending on the year of production and the state of the watch.

Different reference numbers

The James Cameron Deepsea features three different reference numbers: the 116660, the updated 126660 and the newest 136660. The 116660 version has the old 3135 caliber with a 48-hour power-reserve, while the newer pieces feature a 70-hour power reserve thanks to the new and updated 3235 caliber. Expect to pay around €17.000 for the older version and €15.500 for the newer piece.
