The Rolex Datejust
For decades, the Rolex Datejust has been one of the most popular Rolex watches around. Sporty elegance, simple design, and the trademark date with a Cyclops lens: these aspects make the Rolex Datejust an all-time classic. For both men and women, the Rolex Datejust is available in numerous materials, colors, bracelets, dials, bezels and sizes.
The history of the Rolex Datejust
The first-ever Rolex Datejust, ref 4467, was only available in yellow gold, with a matching yellow gold Jubilee bracelet but without the well-known Cyclops lens. This lens displays the date by a factor of 2.5 so everyone could read today’s date. The very first Rolex Datejust dial was cream colored with gold indices. The date window is, from the start, at 3 o’clock. Earlier models have the inscription ‘Rolex Oyster Perpetual’ at 12 o’clock, while there is another inscription at 6 o’clock reading ‘Officially Certified Chronometer’.
The ‘Datejust’ inscription began appearing on the dials of ref 5030 and 5031. From reference numbers 6074 and 6075, it became established on every dial. Back in the day, the bezel was always fluted and made of gold.
Rolex Datejust for presidents
Gifting watches was a tradition at Rolex; Winston Churchill was another iconic figure to receive a Datejust. His timepiece joined a lineage of prestigious giftings, the likes of US President Dwight Eisenhower with his 18-karat yellow gold Datejust. There was a cover shoot for Life Magazine in July 1952 where you can easily spot this watch. Rolex gave this watch as a present on the occasion of their 150.000th chronometer. This tradition also included Konrad Adenauer, the former first chancellor of West Germany, and more recently, the Dalai Lama, Ronald Reagan, and Martin Luther King Jr. These illustrious wearers underscore the Datejust's role as a watch of distinction.
The Rolex Datejust for every occasion
Thanks to its enduring popularity, the Datejust offers a panorama of designs, colors, and materials, catering to various tastes and styles. The Lady-Datejust starts at a delicate 26mm for a subtler wrist presence, rising to 28mm. The Datejust in 31mm is specifically called the Datejust 31, but it is also considered a Rolex for Ladies. The unisex Datejust 36mm option provides a classic touch, suiting all genders, while the Datejust 41 caters to those with a preference for a larger timepiece.
These Rolex Datejust models are available in a variety of colors, designs, and bezels. Back in the day, the bezels were always fluted and made of (white) gold. One of the most iconic aspects of the Rolex Datejust is the Jubilee bracelet, available in steel, gold/steel, or rose gold/steel. Later on, the Oyster bracelet was also made in these two-tone colors.
Since the mid-1930s, Rolex has referred to their two-tone Datejusts as ‘Rolesor’. A perfect example of a classic model is the 36mm reference 126233, which features a fluted bezel, Jubilee bracelet in two-tone gold/steel, and a silver dial with a beautiful sunburst pattern.
In 2021, Rolex added a lot of new designs to the Rolex Datejust lineup. This included olive green dials, and dials with palm or fluted motifs. The palm dial takes its inspiration from the tropical rainforest. Nowadays, Rolex has discontinued these palm and motif dials, making them coveted among collectors.
The Datejust line expanded in 2009 with the introduction of the Datejust II, featuring a larger 41mm case. Rolex developed a new caliber specifically for this watch to ensure the proportions were perfect. It had a larger base plate in the caliber 3136, 48 hours of power reserve, and was certified by COSC: Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute.
A couple of years later, in 2016, the Rolex Datejust II was replaced with the Rolex Datejust 41. It uses a different caliber than the Datejust II but still measures 41mm. This model features two-tone styles and options in Everose (rose gold) and white gold.
Rolex Datejust and its dials
The Datejust is probably the most diverse watch out there in the Rolex catalog, with numerous options when it comes to the dial. Historically, you could opt for colors such as white, silver, champagne, blue, and black. But now, vibrant options like green, motif dials, palm dials, diamond hour markers, sunburst finishes, and pink are available.
There’s much to mention, but some good things to know: if you’re interested in a vintage Datejust, such as a well-maintained reference 1601, these pieces differ as well; you can choose from Alpha hands, a doorstop-dial, or no-lume hands or plots, ensuring there's always something to suit your needs.
Rolex Datejust pricing
If you're in the market for a vintage or pre-owned Rolex Datejust, there is plenty of choice. The Lady-Datejust, starting at 26mm or 28mm, can be found from €4.000 up to €20.000, depending on the configuration, the year of production, and the state of the watch. The mid-size Datejust, at 31mm, is a bit more expensive and starts from €6.000.
The iconic and classic unisex Datejust, at 36mm, ranges from around €4.200 for a vintage reference 1603 to €25.000 for a solid yellow gold version with a stone dial. The Datejust II or Datejust 41 models begin from €9.000, depending on the configuration. The simpler and more elegant versions, with the Oyster bracelet and a smooth stainless-steel bezel featuring a white stick or black dial, are less expensive compared to ones like the mint-green Datejust 41 with a Jubilee bracelet, which can set you back around €14.000. Market fluctuations and model specifics also influence the Rolex Datejust price brackets, especially on the grey market.
Current Market Dynamics for the Rolex Datejust

The grey market offers collectors opportunities to purchase models at varying price points.
