Rolex Datejust II
The daily wristwatch: the Rolex Datejust II, often colloquially referred to as the Rolex Datejust 2, was introduced by Rolex back in 2009, with a new case measuring 41mm. The watch comes with the Cyclops lens to let you see the date by a 2.5 factor. It’s an absolute premium watch, perfect for everyday use. The original Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust was released back in 1945 as a 36mm watch. This vintage Rolex Datejust is a bit different nowadays with the Rolex Datejust II with its in-house 3136 caliber.
Slightly bigger Datejust
The introduction of the 36mm Rolex Datejust 36 has maintained its popularity as it channels the original's classic appeal. The Datejust II, however, presented a bold 41mm alternative in 2009, cementing its place for those wanting a modern edge. Because of the bigger case size for the Datejust II, it stood out from the rest of the Rolex Datejusts in their collection.
The Datejust II measures 41mm and is available in stainless-steel with a smooth polished bezel or a two-tone (Rolesor) yellow gold fluted bezel. The successor for the Rolex Datejust II, called the Datejust 41, is slightly thinner due to the all-new caliber: 3235 compared to the 3136 caliber.
The Appeal of the Rolex Datejust II
Despite being discontinued in 2016, the Rolex Datejust II remains a favourite among aficionados for its bold presence. While some purists prefer the traditional 36mm, the updated 41mm case offers a modern twist that appeals to both new enthusiasts and seasoned collectors. With the Datejust 2's larger case size, it quickly became a favourite for enthusiasts looking to make a statement. The variety in materials, from the sleek Oystersteel to the opulent Everose Rolesor, ensures there's a Datejust II for every taste.
Prices of the Rolex Datejust II
Since the introduction of the Rolex Datejust II, it’s remained a popular model amongst collectors. Prices range from around €9.000 for a pre-owned reference 116300 with a polished (smooth) bezel to €13.000 for a two-tone yellow gold and stainless-steel reference 116333 on Wristler. Rolex Datejust II watches in this range often feature fluted bezels, enhancing their distinctive character. They are available with a variety of dial colors, ensuring they cater to a wide palette of personal styles.
Dials and their prices on the Datejust II
Models with bar indices, Roman numerals, Arabic numerals: you name it, and it is available on the Rolex Datejust II. The bar indices are the most popular option because they hint at the earlier vintage Datejust models. Some Datejust II watches feature their well-known sunburst pattern dial.
These cost you around €11.000 for a well-maintained pre-owned watch on Wristler. The Wimbledon Dial, which is rhodium grey with Roman numerals except for 3, 9 and 12, is popular amongst enthusiasts: these watches trade hands for around €15.000 nowadays.
Market Dynamics for the Datejust II
The market for pre-owned Rolex Datejust II watches showcases the enduring appeal of this model. With options ranging from the smooth, understated bezels to the more assertive fluted designs, pricing on marketplace platforms like Wristler fluctuates based on demand and condition. Collectability aspects like original papers and box play a significant role in price determination, with the grey market often reflecting keen interest from buyers anticipating a potential appreciation in value.
