Description
The Tortue—French for tortoise—was introduced in 1912 by Louis Cartier. It was only the third wristwatch model designed by Cartier, following the Santos-Dumont (1904) and the Tonneau (1906). Its distinctive curved, tortoise-shell-inspired case was a radical departure from the round watches that dominated the era. The Tortue began as a simple time-only watch, but its slightly broader case made it ideal for more complex movements. By 1928, Cartier expanded the line with highly sophisticated versions, including a minute repeater and a monopusher chronograph. These movements were supplied by the European Watch & Clock Company (EWC), a joint venture between Cartier and Edmond Jaeger—later known as Jaeger-LeCoultre. After the Cartier family sold the company in the 1970s, the brand shifted toward mass production of more affordable, quartz-driven watches (like the Must de Cartier) as a response to the Quartz Crisis. In 1998, Cartier returned to high-end mechanical watchmaking with the launch of the CPCP (Collection Privé Cartier Paris), a program dedicated to reviving historic designs in limited, low-production runs. Among the most celebrated pieces was the reimagined Tortue Monopoussoir chronograph, powered by an exclusive caliber developed with master watchmakers including F. P. Journe and Vianney Halter. And just that—we have one of these special creatures in hand: a Limited CPCP Tortue, housed in a beautifully proportioned 37 × 38 mm 18k white gold case, complete with those unmistakable “sexy hips” and the signature blue Cartier cabochon on the crown. It features a silvered guilloché dial with glossy black Roman numerals, a hidden Cartier signature at the VII numeral, and three perfectly balanced subdials:At 11 o’clock — a French-language , a drawing compass-style power reserve indicator (“8 jours” — an impressive 8-day reserve!),at 7 o’clock — a double-framed analog date window,at 4 o’clock — a small seconds display All finished with super elegant blued hands. Flip it over and the magic continues: a sapphire display caseback reveals the hand-wound Caliber 9910 MC, based on the JLC 876 ébauche, complete with stunning CPCP finishing and that glorious 8-day architecture. The watch is paired with a lightly used black Cartier strap and its matching 18k white gold Cartier folding buckle. Furthermore this elegant dresser comes with its original CPCP box (huge !) and the original guarantee booklet stating a sale in 2006. This refined dress watch has been fully serviced by our watchmaker and is ready for many years of enjoyment.
