What is a Luxury Dive Watch?
Dive watches, or so called ‘Divers’ are timepieces with features that are optimized for diving. A great diver must be able to withstand the harsh conditions of exploring the deep waters and helping the owner in doing so. One of the most important features on a diver is of course the water resistance (WR). Dive watches often offer a water resistance of 100m or even more. Other features a luxury dive watch often offers, is a rotating bezel. This bezel allows the owner to measure the time he or she has been under water. The dials are often fitted with luminescent markers and hands to ensure visibility in the low-light conditions.
The Fascinating History of Luxury Dive Watches
It would probably not surprise you, but Rolex has played a big role in the history of dive watches. Back in 1926 Rolex introduced the Oystercase, which is still used today. The Oystercase which was inspired by you guessed it, the Oyster, was a watchcase produced by Rolex that revolutionized the industry. This watchcase was the first watertight sealed watch case because of the screw on caseback and crown, and the robust metals it was produced with. In the 1930s, the demand for these types of watches kept rising and brands like Omega and Blancpain soon followed with the production of watches, specifically designed for underwater use.
In the 1950’s Blancpain caused a turning point in the luxury dive watch market with the release of their Fifty Fathoms. This watch was often credited as the first modern dive watch. In the early 1980’s these watches trade in a lot of their mechanical watch movements with a Quartz one, because these could offer more accuracy and reliability. In recent years, many luxury dive watches from popular brands are still highly collectible and fashionable.
Materials and Design
Because of the heavy-duty use, dive watches often have the need for heavy duty material and durable design. The case is often made of corrosion-resistant and robust material, like stainless-steel or titanium. The crystal should be scratch resistant and needs to provide excellent clarity. Sapphire crystal is commonly used on these watches. The bezel is typically a bulky rotating bezel, usually produced from ceramic. It must be easy to rotate with uncomfortable gloves on.
Because of the lack of visibility underwater, the dials and hands need to be luminescent. The hands, markers and bezel indices are often fitted with materials like Super-LumiNova to provide excellent visibility in these dark conditions. Dive watches come on lots of different straps or bracelets. Nowadays they often come on a rubber or silicone strap. These materials are water-resistant, don’t degrade in saltwater and offer comfortability.

Choosing your Luxury Dive Watch
When you are in the market for a luxury dive watch, it is important to take your personal preferences in to account. First of all, the design of the watch has to be in your liking. Dive watches come in a range of designs, from sleek to bulky and everything in between. Consider the overall aesthetic of the watch, including the shape, dial and bracelet or strap. As with every watch you would ever buy, size and fit are a very important factor to consider. Some prefer smaller watches, some prefer bigger watches, depending on your wrist size and preference.
Dive watches often come with functions. As mentioned before, water resistance is an important feature. If you wish to use your watch underwater, make sure it has functions like a helium escape valve, or even a dept gauge. If not, you might as well focus more on the aesthetic side of the spectrum. Almost every brand has a diver in their collection, so the market for a new or pre-owned diver is huge. Take all your preferences into account and you will find the dive watch for your liking.
