The Famous AP Royal Oak
One of the most iconic sports watches from the past 40 years is the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak. This model with its octagonal bezel and visible screws on the bezel and case make it an absolute classic watch. With the Royal Oak being made with different colors, materials and sizes, it’s the perfect investment and luxury timepiece to wear on a special occasion.
History of the Royal Oak
While most of the watches from the 70s and 80s were made of solid yellow or white gold, Audemars Piguet decided to do something different: they’ve made the first sports watch in the luxury watch industry made of stainless-steel. Not only the materials, but also the Gérald Genta design was an eye-catcher with eight screws on the bezel, integrated bracelet and an octagonal bezel on the watch making it different than all the other watches.
The Royal Oak was meant to be a new multi-purpose watch which you could take on a drive in the car, sailing on the yacht but also for going out in the club.
That’s why they’ve decided to use stainless-steel and asked Gérald Genta to design the first Royal Oak. Taking traditional diving helmets as the inspiration, a few days later the first draft of the watch was completed. Genta also opted for the integrated stainless-steel bracelet which tapers as it approaches the clasp. In the beginning, Audemars Piguet only sold 400 watches of the Royal Oak, because it was expensive compared to other brands and models which made their watches out of platinum or gold. It’s crazy to see that the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak wasn’t popular at first, but now is the bestseller and the brand’s flagship watch.
Royal Oak Ultra Thin
If you’re in the market for an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak that looks and feels like the OG, you can take a look at the Royal Oak ‘Jumbo’ Extra-thin 15202ST. This watch measures 39mm, just like the OG and the case is thin: only 8,1mm. The only difference between the original from the 70s and the current 15202ST is the sapphire crystal that’s being used in the newer models.
You can get your hands on a nice pre-owned Audemars Piguet Royal Oak in different dial colors, such as dark blue, gold, white or even the green dial with a platinum case.
Women’s Royal Oak
Audemars Piguet has made a watch specially for the women out there measuring 33 or 37mm. These 33mm case sizes got a quartz-caliber while the 37mm has an automatic movement. The Quartz Royal Oak will cost you around €20.000 and the bigger 37mm Royal Oak is priced at €40.000.
Openworked Complication
One of the watches that are highly sought-after by collectors, is the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Openworked Grande Complication. This skeleton dial with in-house caliber 2885 measures 44mm with a split-second chronograph, perpetual calendar, week display, moon phase and a minute repeater. You have to pay top money for these kind of pieces: expect to bring around €700.000 to the table.
There is an alternative for this watch: the Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar Ultra-thin. This watch will cost you around €250.000 and measures 41mm and is only 6,3mm thick. The case and bracelet are made of platinum and titanium making it a light and comfortable watch to wear.
