Edouard Heuer, the founder of the brand, quickly gained a reputation for innovation and precision. It was founded back in 1860 in Switzerland, and in 1887 one of the significant contributions to watchmaking came: the patent for the oscillating pinion. This invention improved the functionality of chronographs and is still being used in modern timepieces!
The history
You probably all know Heuer if you’re into watches, but there might be something you don’t know just yet. In the early 20th century, Heuer became synonymous with chronographs. The brand produced different models for sports, aviation and automobiles. The chronographs from Heuer were prized for their precision and durability. In 1911, Heuer introduced the first ever dashboard chronograph, the Time of Trip.
This device was designed for use in cars and airplanes, marking the brand’s entry into the world of aviation and motorsport. In the 1930, Heuer started producing stopwatches and chronographs, especially for racing. Only 30 years later, Heuer became the official timekeeper for various F1 racing teams and events.
The Heuer collection
In 1916, the Heuer Micrograph was introduced, and it was the first ever stopwatch to measure 1/100th of a second. 50 years later, the automatic chronograph was introduced since Heuer was a part of the consortium, just like Breitling, Hamilton and movement specialist Dubois Dépraz. The Calibre 11 was the first ever automatic movement for a chronograph.
In 1985, Heuer was acquired by Techniques d’Avant Garde (TAG), a company known for its high-tech engineering and connection to motorsport. Heuer got rebranded to TAG Heuer, which is the current name for the brand in the luxury watch market.
