New Omega Speedmaster ‘Dark Side of the Moon’: Yet another release

It’s that time again. Omega has updated some of their models, but also released two new ones. Within the Speedmaster collection, there’s plenty to choose from. And Omega released another new one, so it will get harder for you to pick the right one. But, we’re here to guide you through all the news from the Swiss manufacturer. Enjoy!

Throwback

In 2013, Omega released the first version of the Speedmaster Dark Side of The Moon. An incredibly stealthy watch, almost impossible to read the time in the dark, but such an icon on the wrist. The black ceramic version of the 9300 caliber powered Speedmaster was born! What you would expect is an update in 2023 with the 10th anniversary, but Omega took their time to re-develop their Dark Side of The Moon Speedy. The original version features the 9300 Caliber, in-house chronograph movement with a column wheel and a bonus 12-hour dual-time function. The case measures 44.25mm in ceramic, which is scratch-free, but please don’t drop the watch, since that really hurts your wallet.

The update in 2025

So, Omega has updated their Speedmaster Dark Side of The Moon, with three models in black ceramic, available on a rubber strap or the nylon-strap, just like the original one from 2013. So, what did Omega update on their darkest Speedy? They’ve updated the caliber to the Master Chronometer-certified caliber 9900 instead of the 9300, and visually there are some updates as well: they now use a ‘step-dial’ for the Dark Side of the Moon, so it features more depth compared to the older version. The white gold indices now have a slight angle following the step instead of straight. The hands are made of 18K white gold and now use green SuperLuminova, so you’ll be able to read the time in the dark. Another update on the all-black Dark Side of The Moon is the dial: this now features a matte ceramic dial, which looks even more stealthier compared to the older one. And it’s damn cool.

A truly new piece from Omega

The one that truly is new within the Omega catalog, is the Speedmaster Dark Side of The Moon ‘Dark Vader’. It’s all black and ceramic, but the ‘Speedmaster’ writing and the chronograph hand are red. There’s also no date window, making the watch look a bit cleaner, even though the red hand pops up when you look at the watch. That being said, the caliber is different as well: it features the hand-wound 9908 movement, which doesn’t feature a date complication. Retail price will be around €15.800, but just give it some time and you’ll be able to pick it up for 15-20% less on the grey market.

The verdict

Well, the ‘new’ versions are pretty, but it doesn’t really feel like something new. And maybe that’s the best thing about the newer Dark Side of the Moon Speedy’s. The watch will retail for around €15.400, but will be available under list within a couple of weeks on Wristler. Our opinion? Get the older version which saves you some cash, and buy the white dial Speedy as well. So you’ll have a white and fully black one. Best of both worlds, right?
