Patek Philippe Nautilus
The Patek Philippe Nautilus
It might even be one of the most coveted watches in the luxury watch market: the Patek Philippe Nautilus. The value of these watches have been skyrocketing over the past few years, making it a solid investment. The original watch was released in stainless-steel, but nowadays you can also opt for different materials on your Patek Philippe Nautilus.
Expensive steel watches
When the watch was released in the 70s, Patek Philippe advertised the watch as being the world’s costliest watch made of stainless-steel. The demand for these watches is so high that waiting lists are several years long, if you’re lucky enough to build a relationship with the Patek Philippe brand. You never own a Patek Philippe, you just look after it for the next generation.
The earlier models from the Nautilus collection are highly coveted amongst collectors and are seen as a grail watch, such as the reference number 3700.
These pieces were produced between 1976 and 1990 with a 42mm case. Some might call this watch the ‘Jumbo’. These watches sell for around €145.000 or more, since these watches are very popular. The smaller version, measuring 37.5mm debuted in the early 80s and is less expensive compared to the original. These watches sell for around €40.000 nowadays, while you could buy them for around €20.000 five years ago.
The history of the Patek Philippe Nautilus
Patek Philippe released the Nautilus in 1976, which was controversial in the first years of existence. The watch features an octagonal bezel with rounded edged and a steel bracelet made of brushed and polished links. Gérald Genta was the one to design the Patek Philippe Nautilus, who worked for Omega and Audemars Piguet as well.
Since the Nautilus was released in the 42mm case size, it was called the ‘Jumbo’, because the regular case size at that time was 36mm, making the Nautilus a bigger watch compared to other brands.
Different materials on the Nautilus
When you’re in the market for a Nautilus, you can get your hands on the original stainless-steel version in 42 or 37.5mm. These watches are made of stainless-steel and feature a date display at 3 o’clock. There are some other materials used on the Nautilus watches, just like platinum, white gold or rose gold.
Expect to pay around €40.000 for the 37.5mm stainless-steel version, while the 40.5mm rose gold chronograph will cost at least €220.000. The white gold version with a perpetual calendar sells for €10.000 more compared to the rose gold piece.
