Rolex Submariner Date 1680

Looking for the Submariner Date that started it all? The 1680 is the origin story, the first Submariner to add a date complication, introduced around 1969 and phased out by the late 1970s. Early examples carry the Red Submariner signature, later pieces switch to white text, and both live under a charming plexiglass crystal with the unmistakable cyclops lens. It is a vintage diving watch that still reads modern on the wrist, a sports watch with real tool watch credibility and a luxury watch aura that collectors understand immediately.

The 40mm Oyster case in stainless steel keeps things purposeful. You get an aluminum diving bezel, typically bidirectional, with fat font or thin font inserts that can fade into beautiful ghost tones. Matte tritium dials, meters first or feet first, span the Mark I to Mark VI families, with the occasional tropical dial adding patina drama. The screw-down crown is central to the waterproof brief, and you will see Twinlock or, on some serviced pieces, Triplock hardware. Oyster bracelets, often the later 93150 with fliplock clasp, deliver secure, no-nonsense wear.

  • Movement: automatic, caliber 1575 from the 1570 family
  • Case: 40mm stainless steel, plexiglass acrylic crystal, cyclops lens
  • Bezel: aluminum insert, bidirectional diving bezel
  • Bracelet: Oyster bracelet, 93150, fliplock clasp
  • Functions: time, date complication, luminous markers

As a vintage Rolex 1680, pricing varies. White text pieces often range around €12.500 to €18.500, while Red Submariner examples show stronger interest among collectors, commonly €18.500 to €40.000, depending on dial variant and condition. The 1680 follows the no-date lineage and sets up the modern Submariner Date era that continued with later references. That is why it remains an iconic watch and, for many, the most collectible bridge between pure tool watch roots and modern luxury expectations.
