The Rolex Submariner, introduced in 1953, is widely regarded as the most iconic dive watch ever created. Developed as a professional tool for underwater exploration, it established the blueprint for the modern dive watch with its robust Oyster case, highly legible dial, rotating timing bezel, and exceptional water resistance. Over the past seven decades, it has evolved from an indispensable instrument into one of the world's most recognisable sports watches. Introduced in 1969, the Rolex Submariner Date reference 1680 marked a significant milestone in the model's evolution. It became the first Submariner to feature a date display, as well as the first to incorporate Rolex's now-famous Cyclops magnifying lens—two innovations that would become defining characteristics of the Submariner collection for generations to come. Presented here is a handsome 1977 example. The watch retains a lovely, full Oyster case and is fitted with a beautifully preserved fat-font bezel insert that has developed a subtle fade with just a gentle hint of blue, adding to its vintage charm. The attractive Mk I dial is equally appealing. Collectors identify this early dial variation by the Rolex coronet, which aligns perfectly with the "L" in the Rolex signature. The tritium hour plots and hands have aged to a warm creamy patina, beautifully complementing the faded bezel insert. Completing the watch is its Rolex Oyster bracelet, reference 93150, fitted with 580 marked end links and an 'S V4' stamped clasp. Nearly fifty years after leaving Rolex, this Submariner has been fully serviced by our watchmaker and is ready to be enjoyed for many years to come. Few watches combine vintage charm and everyday wearability quite like the Submariner 1680.
