Panerai
With the Italian style, or ‘sprezzatura’, combined with the Swiss manufacturing of watches, you will get the Panerai collection. With large crown guards and cushion-shaped cases the watches of Panerai are completely different compared to other brands. With complicated in-house calibers, the watches are pretty affordable in the luxury watch market.
The history of Panerai
The history stretches back to 1860, while the first watches for the public were only introduced back in 1993. Before, they only produced watches for the Royal Italian Navy with high secrecy about their products. Nowadays, Panerai offers highly-coveted timepieces up to 47mm in case size. With a masculine feel, the watches are popular amongst men. With large dials, luminous hands and indices, the watches are always good to read, even in the dark.
When it comes to materials used on the Panerai watches, they produce their watches in stainless-steel, gold, titanium and one of their own materials made of carbotech and fibratech and special alloys like goldtech and platinumtech. Panerai is one of the few manufacturers dedicated to sustainability where they produce their watches from recycled materials. Their in-house movements were featured since 2005, produced in Switzerland. Sometimes their calibers feature a second time zone, split-seconds chronograph, tourbillon and a minute-repeater. The in-house movements even boast a 10-day power-reserve.
The Panerai Radiomir
One of the most famous watches in the collection is the Panerai Radiomir. The name from this watch comes from the luminous material patented by Panerai back in 1916. It’s based on radium which is radioactive. This watch features a cushion-shaped case, tidy dial and luminous indices and numerals at 3, 6, 9 and 12.
When you’re in the market for a Panerai Radiomir, you can even get your hands on a 1940 Minute Repeater Tourbillon GMT. This watch is made of 49mm rose gold costing €400.000. If you want to spend less money on a Radiomir, you can get your hands on the Radiomir Base Logo for around €4.000.
The Panerai Luminor
The Panerai Luminor is an evolution of the Radiomir, but still features a cushion-shaped case in different materials. The difference is the crown-protector which is large. It protects the crown against impacts and jolts. It also keeps the crown firmly pressed into the case.
If you’re in the market for a Panerai Luminor, you can call it your own for around €4.400 for a Base Logo Luminor Panerai. The 8-Days GMT is a bit more expensive at €9.000 but features an 8-day power-reserve. The Luminor L’Astronomo Tourbillon Moon Phase Equation is the best of the best costing €250.000.
