The Panerai Luminor
Officine Panerai is the Italian company behind the Panerai-brand, which creates unique watches ever since the start in the late 19th century. Ever since the company was founded in Florence, they’ve started working for the Royal Italian Navy since their watches were so precise. One of the most popular watches around in the Panerai catalog is the Luminor, which already exists since 1950.
The history of the Luminor
To start the history of the Panerai Luminor, you need to know about the Radiomir from Panerai first. This was the first watch that was perfectly readable under water, since Radiomir is a compound of zinc sulfide and radium bromide, which glows. And that was one of the most important parts of the watch, so they’ve decided to change the case and design and produced the Luminor.
This Luminor watch from Panerai was released in the 50s, with the trademark crown protecting bridge. A fun fact about the Panerai Luminor: it was a military watch until 1993: afterwards it was available to the public.
Features of the Panerai Luminor
One of the coolest features on the Luminor are the glowing hands and indices, making it easier to view the time under water. The shape of the case is like a cushion which is available up to 47mm, which wears quite large. Most of the watches in the Luminor collection measure 44mm, which is a bit more comfortable compared to the 47mm Luminor.
The dial always features large numerals and indices, and features the well-known protection bridge for the crown as the Panerai watches were made for using under water or even in the military. Another cool thing is the fact that the case is made of a solid piece of stainless-steel, including the lugs.
One of the top-models: The Marina
This one is really cool: the Panerai Luminor Marina which features a chronograph-function with (contrasting) sub-dials and a stainless-steel case and bracelet.
With the well-known crown protector, the Panerai Luminor Marina Flyback Chronograph is the top-model. You can even opt for a titanium piece, which wears extremely comfortable.
Pricing of the Luminor from Panerai
When you’re in the market for a pre-owned or brand-new Panerai Luminor, you need to pay at least €2.500 for a pre-owned piece on the rubber strap, with the black dial and luminous coated hands and indices.
There are some other options as well, when opting for the Luminor collection: the 1950 3 Days (with a three-day power-reserve) will set you back around €6.000, while the Submersible or GMT will cost double that amount.
