Description
The history of the Omega Speedmaster began in 1957, when it was introduced as a sports and motorsport chronograph. While it would later become inseparably linked to space exploration, the Speedmaster was originally designed for racing drivers and timing performance on the track. It also became the first chronograph to feature a tachymeter scale on an external bezel, rather than printed on the dial — a defining design shift that improved legibility and functionality. Presented here is a highly desirable early example: the reference 2998-61. The 2998 series is famously known as the “First Omega in Space,” after astronaut Wally Schirra wore his personal Speedmaster 2998-4 during the Mercury-Atlas 8 mission in 1962, making it the first Omega worn beyond Earth’s atmosphere. This example features the classic 39mm straight-lug case, preserved in excellent overall condition with strong proportions and sharp definition throughout. The original tachymeter bezel is particularly appealing, featuring the sought-after “Dot Over 90” configuration. It is complemented by pump pushers and the characteristic double-step caseback engraved with the Seahorse (Hippocampus) emblem. The stepped black dial remains in outstanding condition and features the applied Omega logo, along with beautifully aged “pumpkin” lume plots that give the watch a warm, vintage character. Correct Alpha hands complete the aesthetic exactly as collectors would hope to see on an early 2998. The flat-link bracelet is also in excellent condition, fitted with end links stamped “6” and a clasp dated 1/60, further enhancing the overall originality and appeal of the watch. Fully serviced by our watchmaker, this Speedmaster with its legendary Calibre 321 is ready to be enjoyed for many years to come. One of the most desirable pre-Moon Speedmaster references — beautifully preserved, with true space-age heritage and strong collector appeal. What more could you wish for?!
