Description
The Rolex Explorer I 14270 “Blackout” is one of the rarest and most desirable variants in the history of the Explorer line. Its nickname comes from the distinctive 3, 6, and 9 numerals, which are filled with black enamel instead of the standard white luminous material — a subtle but instantly recognizable detail for seasoned collectors.
This version was produced in very limited numbers between 1990 and 1991, primarily within the E-Serial (and very early X-Serial) range. It represents the first Explorer reference 14270 fitted with a sapphire crystal. These dials often feature silver text rather than white, and some examples are also known for a distinctive longer seconds hand.
The “Blackout” is widely regarded as the rarest sapphire-crystal Rolex Explorer ever produced.
The offered example is in very good condition overall. It shows light scratches and hairlines consistent with honest wear, yet presents exceptionally well. What makes this piece particularly special is the fact that it is a complete set with a correct, original “Blackout” dial matching the proper E-Serial production. Most examples on the market feature dials that were added later to standard models.
