The first Ingenieur was launched in 1955 as IWC's first automatic watch with a soft-iron inner case to protect against magnetic fields. It was designed for professionals such as engineers and scientists who worked in environments with strong magnetic interference. In 1976, Gérald Genta redesigned the watch to create the Ingenieur SL (reference 1832). This version marked a significant departure from the original, featuring a more robust integrated steel case and bracelet — a design that quickly became a favourite among collectors. The “Skinny” SL models, including reference 9227, were introduced in 1983 as a smaller, more slender (35 mm) alternative to the larger SL “Jumbo” versions. These watches retained Genta’s iconic design but offered a more versatile, less bulky profile for everyday wear. And that’s exactly what we have at hand: an 18K yellow gold reference 9227. What truly sets this watch apart is the presence of the Khanjar and crossed-swords crest — the national emblem of Oman, representing the country’s heritage and traditional weaponry. This particular piece was commissioned by Sultan Qaboos bin Said, who ruled Oman from 1970 until his passing in 2020. A passionate watch enthusiast, the Sultan frequently ordered special timepieces directly from manufacturers to gift to close advisors, dignitaries, and friends. We acquired this piece directly from the granddaughter of the original owner, a Tunisian Minister, who also provided a Rolex Day-Date featuring a similar Khanjar emblem. The watch comes with a handwritten letter from the granddaughter of the Tunisian minister who was gifted the timepiece — alongside the Rolex Day-Date with a matching Khanjar emblem, which we also have in stock. The letter details how these watches entered the family and the significance they held. We even have rare photographs of the original owner, including a striking image of him shaking hands with Sultan Qaboos himself. This watch comes complete with its original IWC leather box, booklets, and the certificate-of-origin/guarantee booklet (unfilled).
