The Breitling Chronomat
With the Breitling Chronomat being introduced back in 1941, Breitling outfitted the earlier models with the slide rule bezel which looks like the bezel on the Navitimer. To be honest, Breitling based the popular Navitimer on the Chronomat in the early days. This functional bezel explains the name of the Chronomat: chronograph and mathematics.
History of the Chronomat
There have been some changes in the collection of the Breitling Chronomat, because the earlier models look a bit like the Navitimer, while the design from 1984 looks like the more modern watches we know see from Breitling. Since 1984, the design of the Breitling Chronomat continuous to be consistent. It features an onion-shaped crown and four bezel rider tabs at 3, 6, 9 and 12. The Breitling Chronomat was one of the most popular pilot’s watches around, but nowadays you can easily wear this watch on your wrist as a dress-watch.
With different case-sizes varying from 32 up to 47mm, Breitling made these watches for both men and women. The Breitling Chronomat is available in stainless-steel, 18-karat gold, rose gold or a two-tone.
Since 2009, Breitling used their in-house B01 caliber with a 70-hour power reserve and COSC-certified movements. You can opt for a GMT-function on the Chronomat, and the top models are water-resistant up to 500 meters (50 bar).
The Chronomat Reborn
With the original design dating from 1984, Breitling released the new Chronomat in 2020 with the ‘Rouleaux’ bracelet. This bracelet is integrated in the case and comprised of narrow, rounded links. With the famous B01 caliber, the top models in the Breitling collection feature a 42mm case, which is available in stainless-steel, rose gold or the two-tone Chronomat.
The dial is available in grey, silver, black, blue or green. If you want to take one of these stainless-steel pieces home, you need to bring around €7.000 to the table. The rose-gold Chronomat is the most expensive at €17.000.
Breitling for Women
Breitling offers their well-known Chronomat as a three-hand watch. These cases measure both 32 and 36mm making it an amazing women’s watch from Breitling. You can recognize these watches thanks to their Rouleaux bracelet and bezel rider tabs. The 36mm Chronomat is driven by the B10 caliber, while the 32mm features the SuperQuartz B77 caliber.
Prices start at around €3.000 for the 32mm Breitling Chronomat, while the bigger 36mm Chronomat will cost you €4.000 or more. If you like your watch being rose gold and filled with diamonds, you have to spend at least €18.000 if you’re lucky enough to get your hands on one.
Vintage Breitling Chronomat
In the luxury watch market there is a lot going on, just like vintage watches from IWC or Rolex. The same goes for the Breitling Chronomat with the early reference number 808. These three-digit reference numbers are highly sought-after by enthusiasts and collectors since these watches date from the 50s. These original Breitling Chronomat’s can be found for around €3.000 up to €5.000 for a NOS or well-maintained piece on Wristler.
