The perpetual calendar marks one of the most prestigious and impressive complications in the world of watchmaking. In 1984, Audemars Piguet managed to do the impossible by integrating the complication into their Royal Oak series. And the result was striking: the Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar 25554 measures only 7.5 mm of thickness, barely 0.4 mm more than Model 5402, which given the complexity of a perpetual calendar is really impressive.
Produced in a run of 223 units between 1984 and 1992 with caliber 2120/2800 the Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar 25554BA enjoyed significant commercial success and began a crucial chapter in the history of the Royal Oak: that of classic complications.
But not only the integration of the perpetual calendar itself was challenging. It was also a considerable technical challenge to maintain the water resistance of such a thin case while also integrating the additional case-side correctors required for the much more complicated perpetual calendar movement.
