Het model met het referentienummer SSH049J1 beschikt over een Japans 5X53 Solar uurwerk, waar het uurwerk wordt opgewonden door alle soorten licht. Deze energie wordt opgeslagen in een kleine oplaadbare batterij en heeft een energiereserve van 6 maanden. De accu van het horloge heeft een werkzaamheid van 15 jaar. Mocht er energietekort dreigen, geeft het horloge een waarschuwing door de secondewijzer in stappen van 2 seconden te laten lopen in plaats van per 1 seconde. De tijd wordt GPS gestuurd en wordt 1 x per dag automatisch opgeladen, indien deze volledig is opgeladen. Het GPS geeft een permanent signaal met 20 satellieten op een hoogte van 10.000 km., waardoor er een afwijking van maar 1 seconden in de 100.000 jaar is. De Astron kan met een eenvoudige druk op de knop overal ter wereld binnen 3 seconden zich instellen op de juiste tijdzone en hiermee kan de juiste lokale tijd weergegeven.
