Description
The Zenith S.58 was introduced in 1958. The “S” is believed to stand for “Super” (water-resistant) or “Scaphandre” (French for diving suit), while “58” denotes the launch year. Some sources also suggest a connection to the Sikorsky S-58helicopter, although this has never been definitively proven. Regardless, it remains an important early—and definitely cool-looking—dive watch. The example presented here comes from the fourth and final generation, featuring a lovely 36.5 mm case and a rotating Bakelite bezel in equally nice condition. The black dial has a beautiful domed or “pie-pan” style, a date function at 3 o’clock, and lumed Arabic numerals at 6, 9, and 12. It is further complemented by the seldom-seen “sword”-shaped hands. The watch is paired with a nice one-pass strap, giving it a classically styled, utilitarian dive watch vibe.
