ROLEX 16550 1987 Rolex Explorer 2 Box andPapers. We are bringing you a rare find this week: a Rolex Explorer 16550, the very first reference of the Rolex Explorer II to feature a sapphire crystal. This model was introduced in 1985 and was only produced until 1988. Consequently, production numbers were quite low, making this watch highly collectible. The black dial shows no cracks or damage, and the tritium on both the dial and hands has developed a light, even patina. The 16550 features subtle but distinct differences from its successor, the reference 16570, such as the specific engraving on the GMT bezel. The model offered here features a very sharp case that has been professionally refurbished in the past. The bracelet, with the clasp code L4 (April 1987), is a perfect period-correct match, though it does show some age-related stretch. The watch comes complete with its original papers from 1987, a Rolex service receipt from 2008, as well as the box, a hang tag, and the 13th link.
