Description
The history of Corum begins in 1955, when René Bannwart founded the brand together with his uncle, Gaston Ries. Bannwart already possessed significant experience in the watchmaking industry and a clear vision for creating a company that would combine traditional Swiss craftsmanship with a bolder, more recognizable design.
The name Corum is inspired by the Latin word "quorum"—the minimum number of attendees required to make a valid decision. Bannwart simplified the spelling by removing the first and last letters, thus creating a short, memorable, and distinctive name.
From its very first years, Corum showed a desire to differentiate itself from conservative Swiss manufacturers. Instead of following established formulas, the brand gradually built a reputation for unusual cases, bold color combinations, and timepieces that often straddled the line between high watchmaking and the art of jewelry.
The Admiral’s Cup is undoubtedly one of the most important and recognizable collections in the history of Corum. The first model with this name was introduced in 1960, and over the following decades, the series underwent numerous transformations, received various complications, and gradually acquired its characteristic sporty and maritime identity.
The collection's name refers to the Admiral’s Cup—one of the most prestigious international team regattas for ocean-going yachts. The competition was established in 1957 and for a long time held an exceptionally important place in the world of offshore sailing.
Despite its strong maritime inspiration, Corum did not create the Admiral’s Cup solely as a professional tool for yachtsmen. Rather, it is a vibrant, stylish, and distinctly recognizable sports watch that brings the atmosphere of sailing into the world of luxury watchmaking.
Today, we present one of the most impressive representatives of this emblematic collection:
Corum Admiral’s Cup AC-One 45 Chronograph A116/04001
The first thing that catches the eye is the characteristic twelve-sided silhouette of the case and bezel. The 45 mm diameter, combined with the massive crown guards and chronograph pushers, creates the impression of an even larger and more assertive timepiece.
Despite its impressive dimensions, the design is carefully balanced. The different levels of the case, the alternation of satin-finished and polished surfaces, and the short, integrated lugs help the watch sit much more harmoniously on the wrist than its raw dimensions might suggest.
The case is crafted from stainless steel and combines brushed and polished details. This finishing highlights the model's complex geometry and creates an interesting play of light on the different surfaces.
The black dial is decorated with a vertical relief pattern, reminiscent of the planks on the deck of a luxury yacht. It lends additional depth to the composition while simultaneously emphasizing the watch's maritime inspiration.
Positioned around the dial are the collection's characteristic nautical signal flags. Each of them corresponds to a specific hour and together they form one of the most recognizable design hallmarks of the Admiral’s Cup.
The chronograph is organized with two large counters, which give the dial a cleaner and more symmetrical appearance. The date window is located at 6 o'clock, and the darkened hands and applied hour markers are coated with luminescent material for better legibility in low light.
The dial is protected by a sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating. The crown is screw-down and is well protected by the massive elements on either side, which visually connect it to the chronograph pushers.
The water resistance of 300 meters is impressive for an automatic sports chronograph with a transparent case back. This makes the watch suitable not only for daily wear but also for serious water activities, provided that the crown is properly screwed down and the gaskets are serviced and checked.
Through the transparent sapphire case back, the automatic Corum caliber CO 116 can be observed. The movement operates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, features 39 jewels, and offers a power reserve of approximately 42 hours.
The CO 116 provides indications for hours, minutes, and small seconds, a date, and a chronograph with a 30-minute counter. The movement is finished with a decorated rotor characteristic of Corum, which complements the overall sense of attention to detail.
The steel bracelet follows the complex architecture of the case. It combines satin-finished surfaces with polished central details and gives the watch an even more massive and complete presence.
The hidden folding clasp is equipped with release buttons and provides good protection against accidental opening. Despite its substantial construction, the bracelet is flexible and comfortable, distributing the weight of the watch well on the wrist.
The Corum Admiral’s Cup AC-One 45 Chronograph A116/04001 is a timepiece that can hardly go unnoticed. It is large, bold, and decidedly different, but behind the impressive visuals lie serious water resistance, a reliable automatic movement, and numerous carefully executed details.
This is an offering for someone who is not just looking for another luxury sports chronograph, but for a timepiece with its own identity, a strong presence, and a direct connection to one of Corum's most emblematic collections.
