The Rolex Datejust in 36mm is the quintessential vintage timepiece. Since its debut in 1945 it has become one of the biggest symbols of the brand’s identity, setting the benchmark for style, watchmaking, and everyday versatility.
Over the decades the Datejust has appeared in countless variations. But the reference 1601 with its steel case, white-gold fluted bezel, silver dial and Jubilee bracelet represents the Datejust in its most timeless form. It’s not a watch you would describe as rare or never seen, but neither are your white T-shirt and blue jeans. Some combinations simply work and don’t need to be rare.
This particular example is an honest vintage piece in good condition. It shows clear signs of wear, but the case still retains that sharp Rolex character. The dial stands out beautifully and remains the visual centerpiece of the watch.
A nice detail is the Jubilee bracelet. Instead of the usual folded links often seen on 1601s, this watch comes with a solid-link Rolex Jubilee bracelet. The bracelet shares the same serial number and therefore one of the earliest iterations of a solid Jubilee that belongs to this watch. Solid links are typically associated with later five-digit Datejust references, giving this piece a slightly more modern feel on the wrist while still keeping the classic pie-pan dial that satisfies that Rolex puristic autism.
