Description
When the first Rolex Datejust was introduced in 1945 – the year of Rolex's 40th anniversary – it made history as the first automatic waterproof certified chronometer with a date on the dial. The "Cyclops" was added in 1955 to magnify the date two and a half times, which significantly improves readability and makes it one of the brand's most recognizable elements.
In 2018, Rolex introduced the new generation Datejust 31. This line offers the features of the original and iconic model in a more modern design, while also including a number of innovations. One of the most significant differences is the movement – the Datejust 31 uses caliber 2236 with an increased power reserve of approximately 55 hours and a significantly improved automatic winding system, where the rotor is on a ball bearing, and efficiency is increased by about 15%. In terms of lubrication, the reversing wheels – one of the critical areas regarding friction – are Teflon-coated. The movement includes a number of patented solutions and offers exceptionally high precision.
Another important element is the Everose Rolesor alloy used – Rolex's designation for a combination of steel and their patented rose gold, which retains its color over time.
It is no coincidence that the Datejust is the brand's most popular and recognizable model after the iconic Submariner – and the Datejust 31 presents this popularity in a contemporary interpretation and in a more compact size. This particular timepiece is in an extremely attractive and relatively hard-to-find combination – a blue dial ("Blue Roman dial") with Roman numerals and an Oyster bracelet.
The detail on this model is impressive. The precise craftsmanship is evident with every glance, and the overall presence is exceptionally elegant. The dial impresses with its rich color, which changes its shades at different angles of light. The sapphire crystal with the "Cyclops" is of the highest grade and contributes to the lower overall height of the watch compared to previous generations.
The case and bezel are an excellent combination of brushed and polished high-grade 904L steel. The bezel is smooth, which gives it a clean and modern look.
The Oyster bracelet is solid and well-crafted, with polished center links and a solid clasp crafted from a single block of steel. It features the EasyLink system, allowing for micro-adjustment in a range of 5 to 20 mm, which provides additional wearing comfort. This particular bracelet has 10 links and is suitable for a wrist up to about 18 cm.
