Description
The model presented today is perhaps one of the most interesting and unique Rolex models ever – for us, this is one of the timepieces we have pursued for a relatively long time.
The so-called "new" Yacht-Master itself was introduced in 1992 with reference 1622, and in 2013 the series was replaced by the improved version 116622 – with a new bracelet, a new clasp, and changes to the dial. The example presented today is precisely from this series, with the newer (added in 2016) and rarer dark grey dial, named Dark Rhodium by the manufacturer.
As is well known, these models are named "Rolesium" by the brand's creators and designers (we have a strong suspicion that at Rolex, besides technical geniuses, there are also quite a few philologists who take care of the names and terms). With this name, the brand denotes the combination of steel and platinum in its timepieces. The Yacht-Master is the first model in the Oyster Professional series in which Rolex used the so-called "Maxi Dial" – a dial design with larger markers and hands for better legibility, which also improves luminescence thanks to the larger surface area.
Another difference compared to the other models in the Oyster Professional series is the shape and thickness of the case – on the Yacht-Master, it more closely resembles that of the Daytona (which is from a completely different series) than that of the Submariner. Thus, the overall look is significantly more elegant and more "dress" oriented than that of its "diver" brethren. The resemblance to the Daytona is also seen in the bracelet – it is a three-row, with a polished center link, solid links, and a clasp similar to the one on the Daytona (this model is precisely the first in which Rolex used a clasp milled from a single piece of steel).
The most impressive features that give this model its uniqueness are the precious metal bezel and the grey dial (Dark Rhodium). This allows you to own a watch that incorporates precious materials without it being ostentatious – visually, the platinum is almost indistinguishable from the steel. The blue accents on the seconds hand and the "Yacht-Master" inscription further emphasize the noble character of the model, while the "Cyclops" at the 3 o'clock position clearly shows that this is a typical Rolex.
We are sure that most readers are aware that Rolex calls its water-resistant cases Oyster. I.e., if this name is present in the title, the watch possesses water resistance. In this case, you will not be exploring the ocean depths, but you will have no problems on the yacht – even in the event of an unexpected fall into the water, as the water resistance is 100 m, and Rolex traditionally tests this indicator with an additional margin.
The dial is clean and easily legible, and the luminescence of the hands and indices facilitates its use at night – it is a pleasant blueish color and glows brightly and long-lastingly.
Despite the fact that the Yacht-Master was created as a professional instrument, it has long since become a luxury accessory. Over time, this function of it began to dominate over its original purpose. Perhaps this is precisely why Rolex places such a strong emphasis on design and overall visual impact. The first thing that makes an impression is the sapphire – Rolex is known for not using an anti-reflective coating on the outer side, which in our opinion contributes to preserving the appearance over time.
For the case back, Rolex uses a solid case, devoid of inscriptions and decorations. As is well known, the brand uses 904L steel, which is more resistant than the standard 316L, especially in contact with salt water. Rolex are true perfectionists regarding materials – a large part of the processes are carried out in-house to ensure consistency in quality. Many watches have passed through our hands, but we can state categorically that few brands pay so much attention to detail and finish.
As we have already mentioned, a three-piece link bracelet is used here with solid links and a profile that tapers towards the clasp, which makes it extremely comfortable. The clasp features a safety mechanism, a micro-adjustment capability, and a diver's extension.
Certainly, this model was created at a time when Rolex was increasingly perceived as a fashion accessory, which however possesses all the qualities to be a long-term partner to its owner. This is a watch that will not let you down and will not lose significant value over time. This is precisely why it ranks among the most attractive and sought-after models of the brand. And last but not least – it looks equally good with a formal suit as it does with casual clothes, in any case attracting admiring glances.
