Despite the fact that Cartier is better known as a jewelry brand (and perhaps one of the leading ones), its contribution to the art of watchmaking is more than significant. The very fact that the Cartier Santos model proudly bears the title "the first men's wristwatch" is a testament to the renown of the brand's watchmaking division. Most series are created, inspired by exceptional stories, journeys, or encounters with notable personalities.
Such is the case with the Cartier Tank series – its first model was created by Louis Cartier in 1917 and was inspired by the Renault tanks which he saw on the Western Front. Soon after, Cartier presented the prototype to John J. Pershing, and just a year and a half later – in 1919 – the model was already in serial production. Its lines and proportions are reminiscent of the tanks from the battlefields of the First World War – the design combines a square and a rectangle, and the bracelet is elegantly integrated into the vertically protruding lugs, called "brancards" by the manufacturer. The distinctive characteristics of the Tank series include a dial with Roman numerals, an inner square scale, blued-steel sword-shaped hands, and a sapphire cabochon crowning the crown. The historical heritage, the prestige of the brand, and the unconventional design make the models from the series a preferred choice for a number of famous personalities, among whom are Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Princess Diana, and Yves Saint Laurent.
The timepiece presented today is part of the current Tank model line – the Française version in a chronograph variant. The model features a steel case, a metal bracelet, and a deployant clasp, with dimensions of 28 × 36 mm. Like all representatives of the series, it features a silvered dial with Roman numerals and the characteristic blue sapphire cabochon on the crown.
At the heart of the timepiece beats a quartz movement from the brand, which ensures reliability, accuracy, and convenience in daily use.
