Description
For us (and probably for many other people), the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak is the most iconic model of Audemars Piguet, and the reasons for this are countless. Beginning its journey in the 1970s, thanks to the genius of Gérald Genta, this series has undergone numerous interpretations, but a few things never change – the octagonal case, the "waffle" dial, the design of the lugs, and a number of other characteristic details. Unlike most other brands that exploit the success of their iconic models by largely adhering to the original design, AP allows themselves to take a different direction. It is thanks to this courage that today we can enjoy a variety of interpretations in terms of colors, sizes, materials, and even concepts.
The model presented today, however, is probably one of the most special, as it not only differs from everything offered by AP until then, but also after it, the brand rarely reaches for such a bold design. Created at the beginning of the financial crisis in 2008, it seems to be inspired by the apocalyptic predictions of a collapse of the global financial system. To be prepared for such a scenario, AP offers its answer – the Survivor. Of course, as an exclusive offering, the model was produced in a limited edition of only 1000 pieces – available only to the most discerning connoisseurs.
The 42 mm size makes it significantly more comfortable compared to the 48-millimeter Terminator, and its appearance literally exudes readiness for any challenge. It is no coincidence that in many reviews the model is compared to a prop from Mad Max – and we can hardly disagree with that. The chronograph pusher guards are inspired by the design of a hand grenade, the crown is reminiscent of elements from the barrel of a Barrett .50 cal, the unique strap (used only on this model) is inspired by a heavy machine gun belt, and the texture of the ceramic bezel refers to the cooling element of the same weapon. Looking closely at the subdial at "12 o'clock," we can even imagine the view through a telescopic sight. Last but not least, the drilled lugs are inspired by the Heckler & Koch HK416. Never again did AP allow themselves such design audacity, which makes this model truly unique and highly valued among collectors.
As is probably known, in the first versions of the Offshore chronographs, AP used the 2226/2840 caliber until 2007, when it was replaced by the in-house 3126/3840 movement. It is based on the 3120 with a modular chronograph from Dubois Dépraz and operates at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour. The movement includes 365 components, 59 jewels, and offers over 50 hours of power reserve. To emphasize its high class, the balance is crafted from 22-karat gold. This particular model is among the first to receive this movement.
This is one of the brand's models that will certainly continue to increase in value, and today's offer is one of the last opportunities to acquire an exceptional example at a reasonable price.
