Although Audemars Piguet is best known for the Royal Oak, the brand’s legacy of exceptional timepieces extends far beyond. Among its most remarkable achievements are ultra-thin watches, a tradition dating back to 1938 with the legendary Caliber 9ML, measuring just 1.64mm thick. AP had already established itself as a master of slim movements, and this expertise laid the foundation for some of the most elegant and collectible dress watches of the mid-20th century. We are happy to offer an extraordinary example: a 1950s “Disco Volante,” or flying saucer, designed by German designer Gebhard Duve. The design was presented to Jacques-Louis Audemars, grandson of one of AP’s founders, and refined into a masterpiece of mid-century elegance. While other brands experimented with saucer-shaped cases, Duve’s interpretation is distinctive, combining Art Deco roots with the sleek minimalism of the 1950s. This 18k yellow gold version features short, elegant lugs, a crown seamlessly integrated into the case, and a brushed bezel. The champagne-colored dial is pure sophistication, with simple stick markers, stick hands without lume, and a small running seconds sub-dial at 6 o’clock. Powered by the legendary Audemars Piguet Caliber K2001—a movement also prized by Jaeger-LeCoultre and Vacheron Constantin—this Disco Volante is as technically impressive as it has a lovely lay out .
