Description
Rolex has more iconic wristwatches than any other brand when you think about it—from the archetype of the dive watch, the Submariner, to the President’s watch, the Day-Date, to the pilot’s watch created for Pan American Airways, the GMT-Master. Add the Explorer, the Datejust… yet no model from the Genevan manufacturer captures collectors’ hearts quite like the Daytona. The watch we now know as the Daytona didn’t actually debut under that name. When Rolex introduced the model in 1963, it carried only the title “Cosmograph.” It wasn’t until the following year that “Daytona” appeared on the dial—while Cosmograph remained, a pairing that continues today. Cosmograph has always been an unusual term. We’re familiar with chronograph, derived from the Greek chronos (time) and graphein (to write), referring to early timing devices like Nicolas Rieussec’s 1821 instrument that physically marked elapsed time on paper. Cosmograph, however, wasn’t coined by Rolex. The word blends cosmo (world or universe) with the same “writing/recording” root. It also recalls cosmography, the field dedicated to describing the structure of the world—and later the wider universe. On offer today is an early and highly desirable example of this legendary model: a reference 6239 featuring a 37 mm stainless-steel case in excellent condition, paired with a crisp polished steel bezel engraved with a 300 “Units Per Hour” scale and “pump “ style chrono pushers. And the star of the show: A silver dial whose originally black sub-dials have aged into a warm chestnut-brown tone—a stunning tropical transformation created purely by time. This kind of natural ageing gives the watch true individuality; no two tropical dials evolve in the same way. The dial also features black-printed “Rolex Cosmograph Daytona” text and T-SWISS-T at the bottom, all set against a beautifully preserved soleil-finished silver backdrop. The watch is fitted with a Rolex folded Oyster bracelet, reference 7835, with 557 end links. The watch and its hand-wound calibre 722 movement have been fully serviced by our watchmaker.
