This rare Rolex Explorer II Ref. 16550 from 1987 features the stunning “Cream” or “Panna” dial, a true favorite among serious collectors.
As a transitional reference, the 16550 marked the beginning of the more modern Explorer II era, with the dual time zone function.
This Rolex sports watch originally left the factory with a white dial. However, due to a paint defect combined with a new type of crystal, it naturally aged into a warm cream ivory tone — one of the most beautiful and sought-after patina effects in Rolex history.
This particular example features the correct black hands and hour marker surrounds, all filled with tritium. It proudly displays the “T Swiss < 25 T” signature at 6 o’clock. With a rich tan tritium glow and a creamy dial, this piece has all the right ingredients — what more could a collector ask for?
A true timeless classic, this watch comes with its original inner and outer boxes with the “16550” sticker, all original and period correct items like Oyster bracelet (ref. 78360), matching clasp (L5), 501 end links, original caseback, and correct bezel.
The 40mm stainless steel case remains in honest, well-preserved condition, and is fitted with the elegant and period correct original clasp — without the later locking mechanism.
