This yellow-gold Daytona represents a significant chapter in watch history! In 1988, Rolex retired the vintage 6xxx series Daytonas, which featured hand-wound Valjoux movements and plexiglass crystals, and introduced the completely revamped 16xxx series. Before these new models, Daytonas weren’t very commercially successful. The 16xxx series marked Rolex’s first foray into automatic chronographs and showcased a modern design with a 40 mm steel case, crown guards, and a sapphire crystal. This shift ignited the Daytona craze.This particular 18k yellow-gold ref. 16528 hails from 1988, the inaugural year for these modern Daytonas. A distinctive feature of these highly sought-after early five-digit Daytonas is the floating ‘Cosmograph’ text, which appears separately from the four preceding lines on the dial. This unique detail is found only on Daytonas with L- or R-serial numbers, produced from 1988 to early 1990. The stunning black dial is complemented by cream-colored tritium-filled markers and matching hands. The lunette is the orignal 200 version. The watch case is in excellent condition, and the bracelet remains as tight as the day it was purchased. Fitted with the correct old style clasp (O10) with applied Rolex logo.
