Ebel was founded in 1911 by husband-and-wife team Eugene Blum and Alice (Et) Levy, using the first letters of their names to create the brand's name. Renowned for their in-house movements and innovative designs, EBEL gained significant recognition with the launch of the Sport Classic in 1977, marking their ascendance in the watchmaking world. If you grew up in the 1980s, you likely encountered their timepieces everywhere as they became immensely popular during this era of stainless steel sports watches, distinguished by the iconic wave bracelet. Ebel’s offerings included perpetual calendars crafted in precious metals, Zenith-powered chronographs (with EBEL playing a pivotal role in reviving the El Primero movement), as well as their own in-house quartz movements. While the company steadily expanded throughout the early 20th century, it experienced remarkable growth in the 1970s when EBEL began producing wristwatches for Cartier under the guidance of Eugene's great-grandson, Pierre-Alain Blum. Ebel was also responsible for the design and production of the highly collectible 'Louis Cartier Collection,' launched in 1973, which featured models like the Cristallor, Gondole, Ellipse, and Vendôme. They contributed significantly to the Cartier “Must de Cartier” line starting in the 1970s, manufacturing cases as well as quartz movements for these timepieces. In the early 1990s, Cartier and EBEL formalized their partnership with the establishment of CEC, a manufacturing venture focused on producing watch cases, dials, and quartz movements. Today, we present a cool Ebel 'Gondole' watch in 18k yellow gold. It's no surprise that we have a fondness for the Cartier Gondole; in fact, Bernhard Bulang has owned one in his collection for years, and it’s the watch that gets the most wrist time! This piece features a 40 x 35 mm 'vertical' design (same case as its Cartier brother!) with a lovely champagne dial, boasting a finely vertical-brushed surface with painted black Roman numeral hour markers. It also showcases a cabochon crown for winding its hand-wound Caliber 97B Ebel movement. The watch is fitted with a nice Bulang and Sons strap, and the movement has been fully serviced by our watchmaker. Contact us to embrace the vibrant 1970s disco vibe!
