"Huitième" (in Old French, meaning "eighth") was Audemars Piguet's prestigious line during the 1970s and 1980s, but it has largely faded into obscurity today, overshadowed by the iconic Royal Oak models! At hand, we have a stunning 41mm tantalum and rose gold chronograph, reference 25644TR. Tantalum is a very hard, blue-gray transition metal that is highly corrosion-resistant. It is named after Tantalus, a figure from Greek mythology. The case is primarily crafted from tantalum, with 18k rose gold accents, and features relatively short lugs, pump-style pushers, and a cool, rather unusual "Audemars Piguet" engraving on the outer rim of the case. The matte grey dial has no lume, a white tachymeter scale, and three subdials with elegant rose gold rings around the chrono dials. Notably, the "Cyclops eye" over the date is embedded inside the crystal—a rare and refined detail—rather than positioned on top, as is typical with Rolex and many other brands. The watch is powered by an automatic movement, cal. 2126/2840, based on a Jaeger-LeCoultre movement.
